I came home from work today to see my CK opening and closing his mouth and also opening and closing his gills. This is extremly odd behavior for him. He had eaten some small gold fish but i think he over ate or is possibly choking, his stomach is enlarged so he did eat, Im really afraid hes chocking...can some one help me??

Did the temp bump up? Heater on the fritz?

Is there enough aeration in the tank? No airpumps or powerheads knocked away from the surface?

These little things often cause behavior like that.

maybe not enough oxygen in the tank?

Theres lots of airation and it is very warm out today which made the apartment warmer then normal. I noticed the tank water did go up a few degrees so that could very well be it. Is it dangerous? Is there a safe way to lower water temps with out doing harm?

Test your water. initial signs of ammonia poisoning can cause these symptoms, as can early signs of velvet outbreaks ( which are very common in feeder goldfish, and can also be triggered by higher temps.) It looks very similar to Ick, but the specs look more like finely ground pepper particales on the fish. scaless fish are suseptible, and can carry this for weeks or months ime un-noticed. I would do a 25% WC reguardless and see if that helps. I don't know enough about CK's to say if it could be anything else but I would doubt a 25% WC would harm the fish.

Heavy breathing is also caused by overeating if your water is good chances are he just ate to much!!

The water is ok and theres no spots or anything. His stomach is still enlarged. Im really hoping he just over ate. Its been a day so far and hes still doing the same thing. He still swims around and isnt showing any sighns of weakness. ill keep updating i guess.

Ugh still having problems although I think he ate his last feeder fish earlier today so at least hes capable of eating. Hell be fed on the frozen brine shrimp again for awhile to see if the problem is from over eating on the feeders.
