Hi guys, was thinking of getting myself a 180 gallon for myself as a bday present this month. The problem is I have way too many tanks already, 210, 144 circle, 120, 2x 55s and a 46. The only way I could get this tank is if I replaced it with one of my 55s but that is on my first floor.
So my question is since there is 8.5 pounds per gallon of water, thats already 1530 pounds of water ALONE without the weight of the tank/stand. I really want to get this tank, but I rather not wake up with a hole in my kitchen/living room. Any Ideas or suggestions? The house I'm living in was built roughly 8 years ago, so its fairly new. Would the structure support this kind of weight? Thanks for any advice/input guys!

Do you have a crawlspace or a basement? Either is pretty easy to reinforce. If the basement is finished then you might have some trouble. Personally I'd put the tank against a supporting wall and sleep soundly at night.

If you're getting rid of one, I'm happy to take a tank off your hands, you're just up the road from me :)

Put it in your basement; very easy solution. People usually don't recommend having tanks over 100g on the top floor, mid floor is a little better because you can re-enforce it from the floor below. People say people make stands or whatever the DIY item may be far too strong. I say, if you can make it stronger, go for it. There is nothing like reassurance

there is another issue that is often overlooked when looking at placing big tanks on upper floors: if something ever went wrong, water tends to work its way down.

in other words, if you ever had a flood, the water would likely do much more damage on a top floor than if it was on a basement level.

sure, the mess would be the same, but the potential damage would be more as the water damage to the upper floor (and the room below) would be greater.

I'm leaning towards re-enforcing it. What kind of services does re-enforcing for mid level floors? I'm not sure if i'll be getting rid of any tanks soon but what kind of fish do u keep?
