My fish keeps scratching himself againts the filter and air bubble strip and its messing up his scales...Why is he doing this? will the scares heal? He was perfect before this problem...i am completly lost and advice would help.

There could be parasites and therefore he is itchy and scraching himself..they also do this on the gravel if itchy..that would be my first concern.

so what do i do to correct this problem??

you can start by using {only}aquarium salt .....if you don't want to use medicine..one teaspoon of aquarium salt per gallon would be a way to start and raise the temperture up a bit.. then if you do not see great improvement or if you see white spots indicating ick..you will have to start with medicine.. but if theres only an external parasite the salt should do the trick..

Many fish engage in this scratching behavior, but I have rarely seen it result in actual damage to the scales. Given the situation as you have described it, I would hit the tank with an antiparasitic med. The only one that I have any experience with is a product made by Jungle Labs which is in the form of a large, effervescent tablet (kind of like a Fizzie). It has no effect upon biofiltration but may cloud the water a bit. As far as your fish healing, my fish are always getting beat up and nicked and these wounds heal completely and undetectably.
