I plan to buy a 125 gal 72''x18''x24''. Im dont know which filter to buy. I want a single filter(Im assuming a canister filter) that can handle that size of tank. any suggestions on brand model or type?
2 florida gars and 1 clown knife. they're all juveniles ranging from from 4'' to 8'', but Im aware that I should add sufficient filtration for them as adults.
if it were me id build a sump out of a 35 gallon rubbermaid tub.. fill it with scrubbies, filterfloss and maybe a polishing pad before it hits the pump... throw in a 800gph pump and call my $130 day over (pump, tub, pvc, scrubbies)
for a canister... i guess start with an FX5 and then maybe pick up another one at somepoint... ($200US on ebay.. much better than $300-450 from LFS or other online dealers)
I would suggest going with two smaller canisters instead of one large one. This will benefit in two ways. One, it will provide redundancy so if a filter were to break or malfunction the other filter can still provide some filtration until the problem is fixed. Second with two filters you can alternate cleaning between the two, lowering the odds of damaging the bacteria colony and creating a mini cycle.
I use the rena xp3s myself but there are currently better deals on some other canisters.
FX5 gets my vote. Or a home made sump if your able to pull it off. You could also do two AC110's or eheim 2217's may do it. Still those fish are gonna get big and generate a ton of waste if fed sufficiently.
i have a FX 5 and an Eheim 2028 pro 2 running on my 120 gallon. these are both good filters. its up to u how much money u wanna spend - this will be the bottom line on what filter u purchase. if u have the money go for the FX 5 and IMO it wouldn't hurt to have a secondary filter as well
My friends... there is not a day that goes by that I don't kick myself for not getting a 150G, (which is actually a 165G) which has the same foot print. If you are looking at an All Glass or Aqueon (?)... then seriously consider the Mega Flow option.
Get the bigger tank... you will not regret it!!!
Filtration - W/D especially if you do the Mega flow...!!!!
Spend more on the better, larger tank first... you will not regret it...!
