My female has laid eggs but won't let the male get anywhere near the eggs to fertilize them.. Should I remove her ??

No, if this is their first spawn give them time to get it right. Possibly the male may have already fertilized them without you seeing him do it.

OK I'll just leave them to it and hope they get it right, this being their first spawn.

Stick with your routine of what your doing such as food, and wc's, and they will keep breeding for you.:) Also I would make a journal on water parameters, temp of the water and foods you are feeding just for a reference to go back to incase anything changes.

Just another quick question.. How long before the eggs are no longer viable ??

The infertile eggs will turn white, and fungus up, some females even with first spawn will instinctively remove them. Viable eggs will be amber color with most cichid species.

I agree with the above ... that the eggs are probably already fertilized. You would know with in 2-3 days.
