The land of the pine
Ive noticed that my Redfin pickerel has been producing white, stringy fecal matter. I think he has an IP. What can I do? I've been adding aquarium salt, but don't know if that will help. I know salt helps almost any fish health problems lol. I need to know how to rid of it because I don't want my other fish getting it and I don't have any tanks to quarantine him in.

Is it eating?

Soak food in 3% epsom salt solution ( one tabledpoon of epsom per half litre of water )

Yeah, he is eating. As much as ever. I've been trying forever to get him to eat frozen foods or pellets. He only takes live. Maybe I could inject epsom salt water into his feeders with a needle?

White stringy poop does not automatically mean he has internal parasites. It could be mucus coming from his intestines or simply what he eats. If he is not losing appetite and weight, I don't think there is anything wrong with your fish.

Okay, thanks. I will still monitor him and try to get him off live feeders more.

Good plan. This will reduce the potential risk of parasite transmission.

By the way, add garlic to the food. This might prompt him to take frozen foods laced with garlic.

Store bought feeders (as opposed to home raised feeders) carry a serious potential for introducing IPs and other pathogens. One of the causes of non pathogenic white, stringy feces is the shells of shrimp, krill ect. IME white stringy feces in conjunction with live feeders (fish) is usually caused by IPs, without the benafit of a microscopic fecal examination I feel it is better to error on the side of caution. Treating with epsom salt as discribed above is and effective way of dealing with this. The epsom salt treatment is less harsh than most OTC meds and very effective course of action while the fish is still eating. Metronidazole and Praziquantel are two readily available medacations that can be us also. There is a medacation availabel produced by API called General Cure that is a combination of both medications. I would suggest to use the epsom salt first as this should solve the problem. I would strongly sugest you discontinue the use of feeders and get the fish on a high quality pellet. Also you should with hold feeding during treatment.

I catch the feeders myself. As I said above I have been trying to get him on pellets forever.

I'll try that.
