The only reason for a bare bottom for any fish is easier cleaning. It isn't natural and sure doesn't look better.
 
Since Brachyplatystoma tigrinum is a white water, rheophilic fish, it mostly likely is found over gravel or larger stones in the wild. I am not aware of a known/shown/proven effect of a tank's bottom type on this fish's biology, health, longevity, etc. People choose various substrates or none.
