I have to replace the molding since the middle brace is tearing away at the front of the tank. I bought the new top rail but I am having trouble getting the broken one off. I imagine it is held on by silicone so I took a razor blade knife and scored around the whole top both inside and outside the tank hoping to scrape the silicone but it doesn't seem to work.
My only other option is taking a block of wood and maybe tapping the bottom of the rim off? I am real worried about breaking the glass.
I would like to hear some better ideas before I do this as a last resort. I have done this before with a 30 gallon where the brace broke off but that on the rim came right off by lifting it. This will not even budge at all.
I got the tank, light, top glass and stand all for $50.00 and it came with the brace breaking away. It keeps moving further and further away so I emptied it before having water all over the house and bought the new brace. Now to fix it.

Thanks!

Just a thought...maybe try using a hacksaw to gently cut through the plastic frame in one spot and see if you can then get a bit of leverage to pry it up away from the glass...
This would allow you to "peel" it away a little at a time until it was completely removed.
Hope this makes sense! ;)

this is a great suggestion and you could cut in multiple areas, which would put less stress on the glass.
