The Belle Isle Aquarium was the oldest municipally run country in the nation. In 2004 it celebrated it's 100th birthday and then It was shut down due to "budget" issues in 2005.
There is a non profit organization that was formed to fight against the closing and re-open the aquarium. The link above points to the Friends of the Belle Isle Aquarium which is that organization. The website has a lot of information that goes through the history of the facility and the mission of the organization.
I personally have been a supporter and member of FOBIA myself from the start and I'm also one that has a special connection to this facility.
If you would like detailed information about FOBIA or the former aquarium PM me and I will be happy to get that information to you.
I know some of the staff from Belle. I wouldn't call them "strong fish keepers". It might work better if they hired a better staff to run it. But man, that place does have some history to it.
