I have a 25 inch red tail catfish that i would be so sad to loose, a 15 inch P. corruscans that has been eating from my hand since 8" , and lots of other big catfish that are worth tons of money. The rtc has never eaten anything that was not hand fed to him in three years. He is in a 300 gallon rubermaid tup with a pump leading to a box of bio-balls and cotton batting. I also have a budda cichlid, 16 red devils ( removed 4 red devils and 2 dovi with infections) and 8 dovi. So now there is only 10 red devils, and 6 dovi.

Yesterday when i got home from school the pump was snagged on a string to keep the plastic lid on (the previous day i had not had time to put the lid on so the string was in the tank) and stopped. I changed the filter and wanted to move the red tail catfish and put him into a 75 gallon for one night to make sure he did not get sick but my brother (I'm only 12 and my brother has a 12 inch oscar in the 75 so he said he would not put his oscar into a empty 50 gallon (18 inches wide and over 2 feet long) so i hoped my rtc would be good because i had to start my homework.

Today i had no homework and went to do a water change when i found the red-tailed catfish had and infection and the red devils and dovi had ich. I tried to get all of the red devils and dovi out but i could not. I only got 6 in total out. I have an empty 50 as mentioned above, so i filled it with driftwood and base rock before i filled it up so the red devils had places to hide. I treated the three hundred with meds that cause your tank to have bubbles but work and treated the 50 with salt. If you are going to say the tanks are too small and the red tail gets huge i know that and am trying to buy a bigger tank so please don't. Here are some pictures.
Any advice would be grealy appericiatedrtctsn.jpgIMG_1453.JPGIMG_1455.JPGIMG_1465.JPGIMG_1463.JPGIMG_1454.JPGIMG_1464.JPGIMG_1461.jpgIMG_1452.JPGIMG_1458.JPGIMG_1462.jpgIMG_1456.JPG

Is there any way you can separate the catfish from the cichlids for treatment? The cichlids can be treated with standard Ick meds but the catfish should be treated separately. Also what med did you put in the tank that made bubbles? Was it Tetracycline?

I can do a waterchange today and catch the cichlids but i have to keep the buddah cichlid in there because i dont have a big enough tank for him. I will have to check the medication name when i get home, but i have used them before on syntodontis petracola and a L600. Also, do you think the things I pointed out on the rtc are tumors. Thanks.

No I don't think they are tumors. Please test your water and post the results. I think it may be a fungal infection or possibly hex but I'm really leaning towards fungus. If you can post water parameters it will help.

Can i test water with meds in it?

Just tell me what you have. Test Ph too.

NitRITe is 0
NitRATe is 15
ammonia is 0.25
Ph is 7

I have no clue why the nitrate is so high because i do fin level water changes every week or so, but i think it has to do with the dead biological bacteria.

You can treat the catfish fish in a hospital using malachite green at half strength with a full dose of triple sulfa. The triple sulfa will buffer the effects of the MG and aid in the prevention/treatment of secondary infections. DO NOT use MG on the catfish without the triple sulfa. The cichlids can be treated with a full dose of MG as long as they are not in the same tank as the catfish.

Do a large water change before starting treatment. Wait at least 30 mins after adding any declor before adding meds.

I dont have malachite green but i used methylene blue and formilin ms to treat whatever he has. Also should i soak the fishes food in salt. Thank you.
