hi i fed my 12inch rtc last night it ate about 4 large prawns and some cod fillets since then it just lays still and is breathing hard is this normal? have i overfeed him and when shoul i feed him next any advice please i want to learn alot about them i dont want to make mistakes

cut the feedings down to every other day and reduce the amount. your not making it grow any faster your making it sick and fat...

No more than 3 prawns in one sitting, feed every other day unless belly is still swollen. You will find your cat more active. You could also go with a one prawn a day deal too. I feed my catfish everyday, but a reduced amount. Good luck on getting them to eat once they are at 3' though. About once every 3-5 days is a good amount once they are adults. Their metabolisms slow the larger they get. They need to eat less and less often and will still gain weight and grow some. Make sure that you do not overfeed as it creats more problems than just sick fish. You can also overload your filtration with a growing RTC. What size tank and what's the filtration?

You will find that filtration inadequate within the next year. I would add at least one more fx5. More the merier. Should be ok in your tank for 2 years or so. Then you will need to upgrade.

Yes RTC's do that all the time...

As far as the filtration issue goes if you set the FX5 up with nothing but the stock foam pads and fill all the baskets with ceramic rings then you wont need to add another FX5. Personally I would add a pair of E400 (emporer) filters with supercartrages for additional bio and simple to clean mechanical filtration. These don't require buying cartrages or new pads all the time either so they pay for themselves. An AC110 would be superior for mechanical filtration but much less effective in the bio-filtration roll...

You could get the ac 110 and use the foam pad and get 2 bags of the bio max then that would be great for bio filtration then every other mo or so switch out one of the bio max bags with carbon to polish the water.
