Hello and thanks in advance. Earlier today I was transferring 2 16'' TSN cats to another tank. The first fish was netted and moved with no problem, besides getting water on the walls and ceiling. The second one was a different story, I netted him and the spine on his side (pectoral) fin got caught in the net. I tried to get him un stuck, but the cat was so strong and flailing so hard, before i could get scissors to cut the net loose, the entire bony structure of the fishes fin was ripped out from the socket. Needless to say, i felt horrible. It took about an hour for the fish to stop bleeding, but its still alive and not moving much. I guess my question is will the entire fin grow back? And should i treat the tank with something to promote healing? any advice would be helpful, thank you

If your discribing what I think you are It will never swim right agan.

Will it live and survive?
probly will but will need to be babied. The problem is going to be that it may become agresive to other fish if they come near its injured side. same reason why a dog with one eye is dangerus if you dont know to pat on the eye side.

Thanks for your input. This morning it seems to be swimming fine, a bit more tentative but just as maneuverable, and eating as ravenously as ever. I guess now i just gotta watch out for infection. I always try to avoid chemicals, but is there something that would be beneficial in this situation to get this guy healed up faster? And what would it look like if it does get infected?

pics would help

It won't grow back, but I don't see any reason for being unable to swim? In the NorthWest plenty of hatcheries remove a pectoral fin from steelhead for ID when they return. These fish do just fine and fight just as good!
