Help set up a tank

I want to set up a 55 gallon with some peaceful american cichlids and some other peaceful fish.
I would like to plant it somewhat and do some driftwood and some big river rocks.
Im pretty open on the stocking, the only fish that are definitley going in there are some firemouths, so anything else would have to be good with them.
I was thinking maybe some angels or a festivum or two stuff like that.
For substrate i think i would like to do 1/3 play sand, 1/3 flourite, 1/3 pea gravel.
Maybe some javaferns and stuff.
This will be my first ever planted tank so i dont want to do anything to hard.

Any suggestions on this, or on what filter(s) i should use?

soo excited im gonna get the 55 when i get my first paycheck ever, this weekend.
 
A pair of angels or festivum would look great with the firemouths!
Some kind of schooling fish would round out the tank,serpae tetras or tiger barbs or something like that.
Javaferns are a nice hardy plant you could try some anubias as well
 
I would go with firmouths and rainbow cichlids or HRP...angels seem too peaceful to mix with fm's

how big are rainbow cichlids?
and whats a HRP, isnt that like some kind of con hybrid or something?

hmm.. firemouths are very peaceful too, but thanks for the tip, ill keep my eyes open as the angels are already purchased, as is one firemouth.
 
i got the heater and the filter today, the filter is running on the afro tankto get some BB.
i think we're gonna get the tank tomorrow or the next day.

so my stocklist i hope is gonna be:

4 Firemouths
2 Angels (which im fully prepared to take out if they get picked on)
10 Neon tetras (I know theyll probably get et)
6 Serpae Tetras ("^")
6 Hatchets
10 Corys or
5 Clown loaches
and a few small peaceful cichlids maybe apistos or rams?
And some kinds of small plecos

Aggresion problems aside, Am i overstocked?
 
well i wouldnt call it over stocked i think after a few weeks the stock will be cut in half so it should be ok.

rainbow cichlids top out at 5". HRP=Honduran Red Points.

I will disagree on firemouths being very peaceful, although they are compared to other Central American cichlids, but not as peaceful as some South Americans like angels, festivums, jurupari for example
