Help Setting up a 500(+) DIY Aquarium?

I have been on this site for, 2 days now? And everybody on here is wonderful. This truly is the greatest free website ever! However, in this thread I am going to need some help with setting up my dream tank in my basement. I have the area picked out and cleaned [my basement is 2,560 sq feet] I would like to have a 500 or bigger gallon set up. The only problem is, I have NO IDEA where to start. So I figured I'd ask some basic questions before I get too technical.

1) What materials do I need?

2) How do I go about filtering it?

3) If I build it, how do I keep the water in? haha.

I guess I'll start here and see if it's got a decent chance of happening lol. If you guys need any other info from me I can provide it.

definitely start reading other's build threads to get the best idea of what you're in for. there are many options and variables in each build. best of luck building a monster tank!
