around the corner from the LFS
when transferring fish, plants and rock from a established 75 gallon tank to a new 8'Lx20"Hx2'W with new substrate what is needed to do so for a successful least stressful tranfer for all in my tank? I am only about 4-5 months into this hobby so this is my 2nd tank fyi.

Best thing is keeping your biological filtration. If you can transfer it to the new tank and spike it off it will help with lowering the stress of the fish alot.

I second snakebite's advice. Run the old filter on the new tank for a while. Also, in my experience, transferring the substrate and tank water from the old tank also helps.

When I've done it in the past I have done as above said - just use an exsisting filter for a little while.

I've also made sure to use the same substrate and the tank water. But also, and I don't know if it makes any difference or not, I tried to decorate it similarly initially and then make some changes.

Also, prepare the tank as much as you can initially as well before you transfer the fish in.

remember dont rush the tanks not going anywhere

i am going to be using new substrate so I wont have as much benificial bacteria as my 75 gallon I am currently checking the new water daily to be sure temp, ph, nitrates, nitrites are all similar to the smaller tank then im going to put in the substrate and plants from old tank then the following day im going to take off the filter off the small tank and put it on the big tank for about 2 hours prior to transferring fish over hopefully this will be okay. I am just real nervous about this process because this is my second tank and I am only 4-5 months into the hobby.

This will work fine. Since you're only moving fish and not adding, the bacterial colony in your current filter is already adjusted to the size of your bioload. Just move it over to the new tank with the fish. You also have more dilution due to the larger water volume in the new tank. It's very unlikely that you will see any detectible ammonia or nitrites.

Okay well ill keep you guys updated substrate will be added today and some plants will be added today as well. Filter will be added on monday and fish to follow 2 hours later. I will post pictures shortly after maybe even post some later today
