There are many factors that determine how a cichlid presents gender traits, and outer appearance it is not always clear cut.
Are there others that may be of the opposite sex in the tank?
Are there other more dominent cichlids in the tank?
In both cases above some males will disguise their sex, if they are subdominant.
A dominent male will have a steep forehead.
Females are more torpedo shaped.
But a dominant female may also sport a steep profile.
Females may show a dark area in the dorsal, but if a appropriate male isn't in the tank, it may not.
