Hello, I curently have a jaguar cichlid of about 2.5- 3inch in a grow out tank with other similar temperament cichlids, wondering if anyone was able to help sex him or her ?
Agree, the gill plate devoid of small spots usually suggests female, although the photo is a bit too blurry to actually tell.
Here's what I mean using its close cousin motaguense, as an example.
male
female below
To a more or lessor degree, this gender trait is shared by most Parachromis.
Small potting on the unpaired fins, and general patterns also suggest female in your photo
The exception could be, if you have a more dominant male in the tank, subordinates will sometimes feign female coloring to avoid attack.
