Help sexing my red tiger mota cichlid

Hi guys I’m new to this forum but anyways my local pet shop got I. This 8” red tiger mota cichlid it was labeled male and the tank and I when I touched the glass it would flare at me and bite the glass that’s what made me think it was male but the coloration is throwing me off it looks male and female please help guys as I am looking for a mate for this fish and don’t want the wrong gender

Interesting. .I thought male at first glance, but the lack of spotting on fins and gill cover indicate female. Looks like a female with dull/stress coloration.

Agree with this, it looks to be a very mature one.

Now a male, note the spots on the jaw, and fins, that don't normally appear on females.

100% female with ALOT of good potential. Feed her a quality pellet & give her big water changes & I think she'll color up nicely
