Hi all,
I was hoping somebody could help me sex the two Dempsey's pictured below,
I'm sure the one on the left is Male and on the right, Female.
Kind of need second opinion on the matter though so I know for sure, I'm new to American Cichlids lol.
Cheers,
Jack
Just as I thought, thanks for the reply mate.
What size do they generally start showing breeding behavior?
The two pictured have lip lock battles at time to time but nothing else as far as breeding is concerned.
If you look at the dorsal fins on the fish in the photo, the fish on the left has a pointy dorsal fin (indicating male), while the fish on the right has a rounded dorsal fin (indicating female).
I wasn't aware you could sex them by the dorsal fin, I heard it was something to do with the coloration on the cheeks. Learn something new everyday these are around 4-5 inches so here is to hoping hey pair off. If not I have two more believed to be male in there that might take her interest
Yes they can pair up around that size.. Try putting the base of a flower pot in the tank. Usually they will start doing strange little wiggling toward each other!
Well I suggest that you ought to make them more big first before spawning, spawning will consume a lot of energy that will delay the growth (girthxlength) of cichlid you see, just sayin, but if you're really for a kiddos well who am I to say what you should be doing. Great JD btw!

That's no longer an accurate way to sex jd's. I have had 2 jd females that had very pointy dorsal and anal fins. The only ways to tell is by venting or by the beard/lack of beard.
Sent from my mind to my fingers to my phone to the MFK servers to you
