im currently keeping 5 small tiger barbs 2 small rainbow sharks a convict cichlid and a "dinosour" bichir in a 10 gallon tank(bigger tank broke, new tank in a few days). they have all been fine active eating. no problems. before i left for work last night i fed them and they ate and i turned the light out. i just got home from work to find all my fish acting weird. sluggish no schooling i didnt see any eat when fed and there all losing color. im thinking chlorine but idk when it could have been introduced. i changed a little bit of water yesterday but used natural spring water instead of tap. i cant even find the rainbow sharks so i hope its not to late. what should i do? is there anything else that it could be?

ok so i made an hour and a half long trip to the 24 hour super walmart (only place open) to get some meds n when i got back all my fish seemed fine playing as usual and seemed to have alot of color back if not all. so what happened? i added some ammonia clear tablets to remove and amonia chlorine and whatever else just to be safe.im so confused now.

How long have they been in the smaller tank? I've had to move my fish over before as well and I've experienced similar problems. I think it's related to stress due to cramped quarters. I'm no expert though, I'm just speculating.

Don't take offense to this but, im guessing you saw your fish in there lethargic/sleeping phase they will stay that way for like a min after you turn on the lights. fish tend to float weird or even lay on the sand when they are sleeping no cause for worry. If this is not the case sorry thats what i understood from your first post. if this is not the problem, post up more info so we can all help you.

oh and the "dinosaur" Bicher: i belive is also a senegal bicher, fish stores give it the "dinosaur" name to make it sound cool to attract buyers

ya i couldnt remember how to spell it so i just used the petsmart name lol. but what worried me is the color loss. my covict was almost completely white and u could hardly see the stripes. also i could reach in and acctually touch them without them trying to swim away. idk but they seemed fine when i turned the light on a few minutes ago

ammonia clear tablets to remove and amonia
These tablets only prolong the problem. Your tank should never have ammonia in it in the first place. You are overstocked, so it will be impossible to feed your fish without their waste overloading the environment you've provided them with. You current stocklist, if they are all juveniles or subadults, would be a good fit for about 45 gallons. The barbs like a lot of room to roam, and the others would like to grow to a size they can survive at, if you'll let them.

ya they were in a 55 gallon but it started leaking pretty bad from a broken corner so i had no choice but to move them. im putting them a new tank most likely when i get off work tomorow morning. and the amonia clear tablets were mostly just to be safe. pretty much all this walmart had. it says it removes amonia chlorine and chloramine and i didnt want to take chances. 80% of its water is from the 55g and it was tested before i put it in the small tank and all was fine

i agree with what someone said about the lights. but if you have a lot of filters, and you do reg water changes you shouldn't have an amonia prob your fish might not have enough beneficial bacteria in there? thats all i can think of sorry

good luck

When did you see your fish acting weird? If it was in the middle of the night and the lights were turned off, they could have been sleeping (as the previous posted stated).

Check your water parameters and keep us updated!
