I'm trying to clean my first tank, a used 120g. Formlery used as salt-water. It has a white haziness on the inside. After reading through this forum I've tried wiping it down w bleach, clr and vinegar (and thoroughly rinsing aftwerards) The haziness is still there, mixed with clear streaks. When the glass is wet, it is not as noticeable but it is still there. In fact, the top middle glass brace, when totally wet is almost clear, but when it dries that d*&m cloudiness comes back. The cloudiness looks like its "inside the glass somehow" Even when I wet both sides of the tank, its still there. Its not like a dried on substance that can't be removed. Can glass tanks do this after a while, become "stained"? The sticker inside the tank says it was made in 1999.

Other than giving up my first born son, what else can I do to make the glass clear? :nilly:

Fill the entire tank up with vinegar? CLR? Does anyone have a suggestion? I'm really frustrated because this is my first tank I paid pretty good money for and right now, without water, it kindof looks like crapola. Even with water, you can still see some streaks in the glass. Am I stuck with a streaky tank now?

Please help.

How does it look when you actually fill it up with just water??

I don't know about your part of the world, but here we have quite a bit of calcium in our water which means when glass gets wet and then dries out over a period of time it gets a weird white layer which I remove with anti calcium spray. But that is for my showers and things.

Not sure if it helps, but that could be it...

My tanks all have a slight haze when they are empty, once they are full you can't even notice it. I have never seen a used tank that was crystal clear when empty.

If it were calcium though, wouldn't clr remove it? Seems like this haziness is "embedded" in the glass. When water is on the glass, its not really noticeable. Haven't filled the tank up entirely yet.

Is CLR aquarium safe? I'm not saying it isn't, I'm just asking.

I've read on this forum other people who have used it. Clr i mean.

Good to know if I ever have a problem.

That's the reason I seldom buy used tanks anymore. It's basically etched into the glass from the minerals in the water. I've seen it mainly with tanks where the sides weren't cleaned on a regular basis. Everyone says use vineagar or bleach but it won't help a bit in this case, it's not calcium deposits. Drives me nuts, but short of buying a brand new tank, all you can do is live with it.

Try rubbing alcohol or cheap vodka, it could be protein build up on the glass based on the streaking. Keep it away from the silicone seals though as I'm not sure it won't damage them. BTW I'm assuming it's a glass tank not acrylic.

Yes. Its a glass tank. I'm so ticked right now. I "made" my husband drive 8 hours to get it for me (while he was on a moutain biking trip) :) The size & stand/canopy were exactly what I was looking for. . .found it on craigslist. I didn't actually see the tank b4 getting it, other than photos. This kindof blows because I was so excited to get it and now its "less than perfect" I'd hate to go out and drop $500 on another tank. ..defeats the purpose of getting a used one on craigslist.
