Hi Everyone,

It has been over a year since I have had a large tank (my current tank is just a 29g) so I am really looking forward to stocking my new setup. It is a 78 gallons... so 48x15x25. I just went and looked at what my LFS had available and this is what I saw that appealed to me...

Synspillum
Nicaraguense
Sajica
Super Red Severum
Green or Turquoise Severum (not sure which)
Chocolate cichlids
Uaru

I have kept almost all of the above before, but it was in a much larger tank (6ft 180g) so I am seeking some advise on how to stock my current tank. I would really like to include the Synspillum if I could, but I am afraid it may outgrow the tank and I do not have the space to upgrade this tank in the future. I would ideally like to have at least 3 of the above and maybe a fancy pleco. Please let me know based on your own experience what you think will work well.

Thanks,
Katie

Yea the syns and uaru will outgrow that i would look at a nic pair or severum pair. The choclates would also work for quite a while. I agree though the syns a beautiful i have a pair with a uaru in a 135 do great together. I personally would do nics for their nice color. You could also look at rainbow cichlids. Best of luck with your project.

I am not really interested in doing a breeding pair. I don't have another tank to use to raise the fry or to separate the parents if things get aggressive. I would rather have a small group of single specimens. Would the Uaru really outgrow the tank? I thought they maxed out at 10 inches.

Yeah Uaru do get to 10" but they are an open swimmer, they never stop moving so they prefere to have long tanks.
If I was you I would stock it however you want, and either upgrade or downsize stock as you see fit, thats what everyone does anyway. Hardly anyone will go out and buy their exact final stocking and never add to it. we all know this to be true lol.

the problem with Synspilum is that the males can reach pretty big sizes 15" or so. you could try going for a smaller vieja species or just replace it with something different.
sounds like a pretty low level aggression tank so you could add some dithers and catfish to the tank or maybe even some geophagus. the Severums will be your centrepiece obviously.isntead of sajica you could go for Cutteri or Jade Eye Cichlids,or You could also go for Honduran redpoints as they are way more peaceful than convicts and look a lot nicer.

you have good options to mix and change around that configuration. like I said, you can upgrade later down the line or downsize your stock, but just make sure the water quality is good and they are all happy and healthy. A lot of members here that keep festae and other aggressive large fish (Aro's, Pbass, Dats, you know that same 1 tank that seems to be owned by about 1000 members) will look at your 78g and think its tiny but the sad truth is those people are all looking down from their high horse, and see that its a perfectly legitimate tank size for keeping cichlids. and that not a single member on here is not guilty of overstocking or unfit tank size throughout their entire fishkeeping hobby.

My uaru is over 10 at 3 years old i also heard 8 - 10 before i got him after extensive research i have heard of alot of them getting larger than that not shure how common though. If you are gonna upgrade then for shure get what you really want they will still take awhile to growout.

I'd go for a red sev and a sajica ,both are beautiful fish and not real aggressive. then maybe a small cat or pleco

what he said ...about tank size for cichlids

both Cichlidfish and Chub-by are right. I have a 225 gallon tank with a school of 8 columbian tetras, you can never be big enough to have a school of fish, they make interesting movement and colour to the tank. if you can find honduran redpoints they do make really good tankmates with lots of fish, mine have lived with Chocolate cichlids, Nicaraguense and geophagus so I can personally vouch that they play well with other non aggressive species.
