Feeder Fish

I was feeding Pekoe and Nazi, my blood parrotfish yesterday morning when I noticed what I first thought was like lint or little carpet/fabric hairs. They were white. As I looked I saw more of them being swept by the current of the filter and as I looked they appeared to wiggle Shocked

So there are dozens of these "worm" things in my tank. They're very thin, about the width of a hair and not very long: 3-4 mm tops. They're not fish babies or mosquito larva, I have never seen them before.

My fish look okay, but I noticed they don't leave their enclosure even to eat. I tried joining http://www.goldfishparadise.com/forum/phpBB2/index.php to post this, but everytime I sign up I never get an activation email sent to my inbox (I've tried 2 different emails).

Do any of you know what these things are? The filter doesn't seem to be doing much, but I'm gonna change the cartridge anyway.

Edit: I did a search and found out they're probably "planaria." They said it's a symptom of undercleaning and overfeeding, but I just cleaned the whole tank a month or two ago and feed only once a day. :/

I emptied all but about three inches of water from the 20 gal and replaced it with rainwater from our bucket outside probably 6 weeks ago when I had to move the tank to my room. I'll try a second, lesser, water change and see if that does anything.

I gave them some good advise on cleaning their tank and asked how many fish were in there. (I also asked the ammonia was, since I'm sure it's insane.) I've never had trouble with Planaria, what should I tell them?
(They have two Parrot fish in a 20gallon tank, as I've just discovered)

What kind of filtration do they have? Should be doing weekly water changes.

those worms result from a buildup of uneaten food in the gravel and/or in the filters. i get them a lot, mostly because of leftover zucchini bits that get trapped in the driftwood. cut back on feeding, make sure the filters are not clogged, check under decor to get rid of trapped food, and gravel vac as much as possible with each water change.

Did they say they cleaned the whole tank a MONTH OR TWO ago...ROFL

WE HAVE THESE!!!
I have no clue about fish, they are my hubby's and i get to take care of them for the next 3 years while he is gone, so are these things dangerous to the fish? I noticed we have them in one of our tanks, I am not sure what I am supposed to do cleaning wise but I do 30-50% water change every week (is this normal, hubby's directions) and vac the gravel as i do it. There were lots when I first noticed, fewer this last week. Where do they come from? Will they die off or what? I am guilty of over feeding, have discontinued!!!!

do a waterchange..has he told you how? and syphon the bottom..

These little worm things are pretty much your frieds. Dont kill them. It is a result from little to no gravel vac's and overfeeding. These little worms live under your gravel and eat the unwanted food and debri. I had these a lot in my fry grow-out tanks from regular feedings.

The best advice is to cut back on feeding (by 30%-60%), but still make sure your fish get to eat enough, and gravel vac your gravel as much as possible. Then do 30-50% water changes once a week and clean your mechanical filter pads often.
