*help* substrate for a African cichlid tank?

Hi everyone

Im starting up a African cichlid tank soon and was wondering about the best type of substrate so use as far a water buffering goes. The guy at my LFS pointed me in the direction of Calcium Carbonate. If you have used this as substrate before or know abit or even have a suggestion about a better substrate please let me know.
