Help super high nitrAte ?!

Nitrates at 40ppm isnt even that bad its only a tiny bit higher then normal.. Im not even sure if that will be a problem to them, all i would do is just change the water more.
 
more water change, make sure the water you are adding isnt high in nitrates already.
 
The high nitrates are why you have cyanobacteria in the substrate, although some may think this not dangerous, it is abnormal for a riverine fish to live in such conditions. Rivers have constant movement (water change every second) . You should be doing water changes 2-3 times per week. I try to maintain nitrates between 2 and 5 ppm in my tanks (to some excessive I suppose), with that water change regime floating plants, and planted sumps .
