I am in need of some help here.
I just bought a used 260 gal. acrylic
tank. There are 2 overflow boxes R/L.
There are 2 holes drilled for Each overflow.
* Why 2 holes and not just one ?
*and how to properly setup this type of overflow
system.
Thank you.

Yeah ive noticed this question twice this week. Twin holes in the weir!.
Its ether a twin silent dump pipe system, or if there is no other evidence of holes for return, its meant to one of them.

Your serve...

This is the setup I will have in my 375g. It's commonly called a Herbie system (after the hobbyist who admittedly stumbled upon the configuration), and involves a drain and a safety. There is a more advanced version (called the beananimal from another hobbyist who expanded on the Herbie) that has 2 drains and a safety.

So back to the question. Typically, there is a drain and a return, but if there isn't a cutout for lock line returns, chances are it's drilled for a herbie style. (see links)

As I get closer to putting my tank together, I'll put some pics and designs up. As of now, my tank is in my garage while I do other projects around the house.

Oh, and here's the beananimal (3 pipes)

Not having a crack in any way at anyones choices, however i often wonder why a straight well built durso isn't quiet or efficient enough for people.

Two holes per box? If they are different sizes; the larger one is the drain pipe, and the other is for the inlet pipe. Google Megaflow Kit and it'll make sense.

Because they aren't silent. They're quiet.

Thats exactly my point. Its essentially gears of your drive system. Im able to walk into the room, & instinctual sound driven clues tell me in an instant if something is wrong. So im already assessing the status, well before ive even used my eyes.

Wouldn't trade it for anything. Even though your mind acknowledges it, it still blocks it into background noise.
