horseheads, ny
OK, So I went to my friends house and I am checking out her 35gal. community tank and I see this horror show! It is an african upside down cat that I believe she has had for several months in an established tank. I had my camera so I got a vid of it couldnt get any decent pics after I took some decor out and kicked up debris from the bottom. Its extremely bloated and it has white marks on both sides. I believe the marks might actually be where it has stretched to its max! I dont know what her parameters are. I know she is pretty good about doing water changes but thats all I know about the tank. Is this thing saveable? What do I need to do? Any meds recomended? Quarintine tank? Treat the whole tank? She feeds bloodworms brine and flake. I havent had to deal with many sick fish, So I need help to save this poor bloated lil' sob.

definitly take and put it in a different tank the stupid tetras attacking it through the whole video and it has noticeble wounds from it on its sides.

yeah the fish attacking it while its having health issues and im sure is extremely stressed out...is just making the catfish freak out and making it worse...id deff seperate him...

Wow honestly I didnt even notice the cherry barbs chasing it. I was too busy freaking out myself trying to figure what happened to him. He was hiding under a piece of driftwood that I took out . Any meds you can suggest? I dont know if she has another tank to put him in so we might have to put the little guy down if I dont get suggestions on how to treat him in the tank. Is this something that could be given to the rest of the fish? Could I try to make a bunch of hiding spots and treat him in the tank? I dont want the rest of her fish to get sick but I dont want to give up on this thing if I dont have to. But I dont even know where to start as far as meds.

that poor thing. he wont be able to go back in the tank with the barbs-they will pick him to death.

it looks like bloat to me-bloat is caused by stress (go figure! lol) and some say too much aquarium salt in the tank, and its still up for debate whether its bacterial or caused by a parasite. i know that mortality is pretty high-and once it gets to the point where the fish looks like a puffed out pineapple its usually too late- it causes liver and organ damage (swim bladder damage)

if i were you, i'd soak his food in metronidazol (if he is still eating). the brand SeaChem makes a form of metronidazol that binds to food. OR you could treat with Clout-but do NOT use clout and metronidazol together!!

also DO NOT USE aquarium salt! in treating bloat never ever use aquarium salt. you need to go buy some EPSON salt (what it does is it eases osmotic pressure in the fish, allowing it to get rid of some of that fluid) if you use aquarium salt you will kill a fish with bloat.

i would do a 50 percent waterchange after a week of dosing and see how the fish is doing.. best of luck to the little guy, he looks pretty bad.

crap i forgot to tell you, id probably use the CLout-its strong stuff and is good at treating bloat. also, be forewarned that i think it will dye your tank blue-so make sure its in a tank with nothing you want to keep lol
