I recently posted about my acquisition of 4 baby rbp's about a month ago. They are doing well. However, one of my good friends owns an lfs and just recieved a few babies back from a guy who wanted something that was already grown. They appear to have some variation of fin rot (I'm not sure of this.) The fins on them appear shredded on the worst one, and damaged on the others. My friend at the lfs has given them to me, and I have the three (1" long each) in a 20 gal for now. He believes their wounds/illnesses can be attributed to water with high ammonia levels.

If this is the case, is there anything I can do to promote healing other than make sure their new home is up to par?

Water changes and melafix. I would think their illness has to do with improper tankmates. If the guy returned them wanting larger ones you have to wonder why.

Maybe he lied but he said they were alone, and there were only three. When my buddy asked him about his water parameters the guy had no clue what he was even talking about

Sounds more like they have inflicted this damage to eachother, very common in juvy rbp

It doesn't look like fin nipping though. if i had a better camera i'd get pictures of it. I'm just keeping a close eye on water parameters and giving dosages of melafix

honestly melafix isn't all it is cracked up to be imo. it may promote healing a little, but I've noticed no real differences when it comes to recovery time.

EDIT: Then again, it can't hurt - it's very safe to use. Some people say that it causes stress in fish, and may cause them to breath heavily, but I don't see why. It's pretty weak stuff.
