I went to a LFS today and they had a group of fish dropped off. This guy is about 5 inches nose to tip of tail, a bit skinny, and I think the dark color on him is related to stress more than being his real color. I first thought he was a Jack Dempsey when I glanced in the tank, but then he turned sideways and he has a little pink on the head and gill area, and blue and green dots on a silverish bachground similar to a texas. He also had a flower line by the tail. He was in a with a texas (in photo below) and some other fish, his spotting looks like a texas in some areas, but he's no texas. Any ideas? Could he be a hybrid or am I just looking at a juvie that I can't figure out?

Sorry for the poor cell phone pics, he wouldn't hold still very long.

I agree, a skinny little synspillum.

It needs some tender love and care. But not the kind of 'lovin' the animal guy gives his fish.

look like a synplis x texas..........?

i've seen them called shine spot synspilum. definitely a synspilum or synspilum hybrid. should be a very attractive fish with some TLC. :)

I edited this photo a bit by enhancing the hue and contrast and sharpening it up, it looks more like him now, the originals washed him out. I also resized it - sorry about the huge file above, I tried to edit afterwards but it said I waited too long to edit anymore.

I haven't picked him up yet, they are asking $10, and I don't know if he will get along with my other fish as nice as I hope. He would go into the green terror tank for now if I did get him. What are thoughts regarding aggresiveness? My terror is fairly relaxed, but the new fish would be a good inch bigger than him.

Yeah, I needed someone to tell me that, I don't need another tank right now and I hate feeling like I need to rescue the little guy too.

After looking at some photos I do think a vieja synspilum is the closest. There are some nice photos out there too of them.
