A student brought me a juvie bearded dragon that the amily no longer wanted. He was stuck in a SMALL tank with terrible lighting. I knew next to nothing about beardied so I've read everything I can and I just want to make sure he'll do ok during the winter...here's what I have so far:

55 gallon tank
30" strip light with 10.0 UVB bulb
100w red night light in a 5.5" lamp
100w blue day bulb in a 5.5" lamp
both lamps are hooked up to zilla temperature controllers
both controllers are hooked up to timers

14 hours a day of UVB and blue heat
7 hours a day of red heat

is that ok??

sounds good. how big is it and what is his diet going to be like?

I've given him crickets covered in calcium...butter worms...and a hornworm (gross!). I leave him veggies but he doesnt seem to like them.

He's about 7" from head to base of tail.

Whats the best substrate? Calicum sane or just playground sand?

Both work just as well but playground sand is cheaper. try different veggies, you need to get him to eat those. You can also feed it fruits but do so in moderation. Mine was partial to red cabbage and bananas and I would hide a bunch of other stuff in its food too.

Do I have to wash the playground sand or anything before adding it to the tank?

Would pool filter snd be better? I use it in my fish tanks because it is supposed to be "rounder"...

get rid of the red and blue bulbs and use white light. white light actually helps their pupils filter out excess UV. more natural as well.

best substrate would be rock tiles, newspaper or papertowel..

no and no. playground sand is great as is. I have used it do dozens of cages and have never had any problems.

Where can I buy the eco carpet in brown or a 55 gallon tank?

Don't use that stuff, it's crap. trust me. If you are gonna do that, use news paper or paper towels. Tiles are okay too.
