Well, I would think you destroyed your biological helpers when you cleaned/changed things. Keep up water changes every other day until you have you grow your little helpers back.

P.S. filter media doesn't grow worms.

Sorry I can't be of more help with your filtration, but my own franken-sump is testimony that me helping you is equivalent to a jag helping a rosy red.

Your tank sounds like it is going thru a cycle again...

You adding a new filter to the tank and tossing the old will put the tank into a mini-cycle.. but if you killed the Beneficial bacteria in the previous water change then you put the tank into cycle...

My suggestion is to use a product called Cycle and to use Prime... keep an eye on the nitrites and ammonia. Don't let the ph fall or rise either as this is critical when establishing a tank..

Cycle is bacteria in a bottle.. it works but it's a temporary solution...

Prime removes chlorine, chloramine and converts ammonia to a non toxic form.

^^

by changing all of your filtration you removed all of the good bacteria causing your tank to mini cycle... sounds like you are having a bacteria bloom...

do some research on cycling and keep an eye on your parameters.. if you dont already own a test kit now is the time to get one..

changing media pads should only be done when they fall apart.. till then just fill a bucket with tank water and rinse them out when they start to clog.. and whenever you do have to change them only change 10%-50% at a time.. never do all of it..
