Fall River Ma.
so i wnt to the LFS to buy a few electric blue Dempseys.... while i was there i noticed these other fish...they are beautiful.... i bought 4 of them for $4.00 each... what are they? i need to research their care...
I think i have 2 males and 2 females....in the pics are 2 of the males..
the 2 possible males have a horizontal stripe down there side with a larger spot in the middle.... they also have a green blue shimmer on their heads and dorsal fins..they also have a yellowish back half of the body with small "egg spots" on their anal and tail fins....
the females are drab and lack the line down the side... all they have is a single large spot on the center of their bodies...
any ideas???
These pics don't do them justice...they practically glow!!!!

Hypsophrys nicaraguensis ... nics for short usually.

Looks like a Malawi cichlid, could be a Pseudotropheus of some sort. Hard to tell from the pictures, and the size of the fish.

they just look like rams to me but idk picture quality and bad eyesight so dont leave me up to that

i thought they must be a larger relative... these are already over 3 inches... too big for rams...right?

Yes they are CA Nicaraguense.

You got the sexes wrong though. Typically males are more drab. May lose horizontal line and only have spot. Fins may be reddish with spots in them. Males get to about 8"

Females are the pretty ones. May be gold in color with blue head and orange belly. Usually keep horizontal line and spot. One of the prettiest CA cichlids. They max at 4-5"

They can be a little aggresive especially when spawning. They are not common in LFS because they are drab at small size and not appealing to customers. The color up at 3" as you have seen. A 3" colored up fish is a steal at $4. Usually a 1.5-2"" baby cost that.

Good luck with them.

Good looking nics for that small of a size. Good price as well. My female is not that aggressive. But I had a male before and it was real aggressive.

that is a very good retail price for the nics at that size. As for aggression, the one I had wasn't too aggressive, very much in the same boat as something like a jack dempsey
