so I was sitting on the computer and i heard a loud splashing and bag and i go in the living room to see my jack Dempsey spinning in circles and hitting the tom and bottom of the tank then he calmed down and wedged his self in the corner. now he is out and is breathing really hard? whats gong on? the tank is a 240 and it has been up and running for a about a month or so and this is a adult fish that i have had in my dads tank. I have about 10 or so other cichlids in the tank

here are some pics of him right now and of the tank

I also do 85 percent water changes every sat or Sunday if that helps

Keep an eye on him. Fish jump. If they hit the tops, then it all depends on how hard. Many times they knock themselves silly, swim around dazed, confused and recover.
Sometimes not.

Find out if you have stray voltage in the tank, check water parameters. Basically try and find out why he was trying to get out. There really isnt anything you can do for him if he has injured himself internally. Sorry.

there should not be any stray voltage and i just ran out of test strips.

I have also noticed lately that the fish are rubbing in the sand every once in a while and have been doing this since i got the tank up and running pretty much but i didn't really know if it is a big deal or if the are just rearranging the sand and making beds.

85% water changes sounds a bit odd . . . why so much?

how much do your parameters change between W/Cs? if your W/Cs cause significant changes in tank parameters, it could stress the fish . . .

then again, JDs can be skittish and unpredictable for no good reason . . .

maybe an allergic reaction to something in the water... i hear this can happen when using prime.

My cory cats does the exact same thing almost very night... but i found out this was a breeding thing... maybe the same??
