okay so here are the facts: in my little 2.5 gallon betta tank, the whisper filter it came with was not moving water well at all (like, barely). it was still running a little so i put off getting a new one cuz rent is due :P and my betta ended up getting dropsy's. i feel like a horrible fish mommy if i can't even keep a betta happy...

i went and bought a new little filter but couldn't put the carbon filter in because i started her on maracyn II for bacterial infections. so of course the tank got cloudy. in another day, there was this wispy, kind of milky fluffy growth on everything in the tank; filter, rocks, acrylic walls, live plants.

anywho, the poor betta died and i want to put another fish in there eventually. does anyone know what this crap is and if it's safe for another fish to live in that tank? can i just scrape it off, or should i deep clean the tank with bleach or whatever?

I would completely clean the tank over with boiling hot water (As hot as you can stand it) and then clean the filter pads.

that's what i was thinking. it's so wierd and soft looking, but i'm afraid to touch it. :( does anyone know what it might be?

idk, i think it might just be tank slime that clings to more tank slime or something. cause i had a lot of that in a tank that was just sitting there without water circulation and no fish in it, just used gravel. that stuff will start to smell after awhile so best you dump it and rinse thoroughly. boiling water is a little bit overkill but it won't hurt. unless you scald yourself. then, that kind of would hurt.

lol, awesome thanks. so if i give a good scrub-down and throw in a new carbon filter and wait for params to be normal i can throw a fish in? just cuz i'm lazy and if you think boiling water and bleach is overkill then i don't wanna do it. :D

sounds like a mold or fungus. Scrup, hot water, bleach, hot water, rinse off well, you are good to go. No such thing as overkill in good fishkeeping

okay well then i shall do all that. honestly, it's a 2.5 gal, LOL, it's not like it's a herculean effort to clean, i'm just pretty lazy. :(

Time is money. Unfortunately dead bettas are also money. Just take a few minutes. It is worth it. Good luck with your fish, and post pics when he is comfortale in his new home :)

Would seem silly to do anything other then clean the entire tank. Especially since it is a small tank.
