Hey guys, I recently aquired a 20 gallon tall saltwater, that has a Eclipse top(that has the filter system and light built in). I hate it, because I dont think it filters the water enough, not to mention the fact that Im stuck using one 18inch bulb which limits me to fish only. Well I purchased a Maxi-Jet 600 powerhead and put it as close to the bottom of the tank as possible without sucking up sand, to help move the water around some. Im thinking about purchasing a Fluval 105 canister filter, and a light setup that allows me to have a bulb for the fish and a coral life bulb as well. I can get the Fluval 105 for $25 from a friend, do you think that will be sufficiant(sp)? Whats the cheapest way for me to get rid of the eclipse hood, I would like to have some coral in the tank as well.
In the tank now I have a few pieces of live rock, clownfish,2 damsels, a sea urchin, 2 hermit crabs, and a snail.

What should I do ?

Yes that filter is way to small for it.. You have a 20g tank.. Times that by 10-15 and thats how much filtration you should have.. I would suggest 1 more powerfilter and/or a canister filter. Any filtration will help.. You could also get a small protein skimmer, that will help alot. I have one on my 20g reef... About the top.. If you remove the top and buy a glass top, it may fit on it.. Just make sure there are lips for it to sit on.. For any good growth a 65w compact florescent is needed.. Since it is a tall tank, it limits the fish you can have. Fish that need swimming room are no good, but fish that mainly swim vertically are better.. Clowns are good. Hope this helps, I can answer any other questions..

Nope, from my experience and working at a fish store, what the filter says, cut it in half..The fluval 105 is more like a 15g tank.. SW needs good current, so powerheads and filters help create current all over.. Keep the filter you have now, and buy 1-2 more.. or 1 really nice one.. Doctor foster and smith is a good website for any items in quantity.
