Hello MFK, it has been awhile since I last posted. Anyway, I was wondering what you would recomend for my next fly rod. I currently have a ll bean quest 2 5wt fly rod. This was bought on a impulse, but am now addicted to fly fishing. My second fly rod will be used for brook trout and panfish.(I was thinking a 3 or 4wt) I am thinking about a clear water 2 outfit from orvis. Is this good, or should I think about a different rod and reel? Thanks in advance.:)

Hello; How long is your current fly rod? Over time I have moved to the longer rods ( 9 to 9 1/2 ft) for fishing from a boat and a 6 ft for some streams. I have also gone toward the lighter weight rods as well with a 5 - 7 wt the lowest so far. I have not tried the 3 -4 wt yet. The one that I wind up using the most in the last several years is a 9 1/2 ft 5-7 wt with a #8 or #9 line (weight forward floating line).
I also like a rod which flexes mostly at the last third of the tip an is stiff toward the grip. For me this type is easier to control.
I very much like the tapered braided nylon leaders as well.

I also have another question, I have a OCEAN CITY 77 fly reel, and I was wondering if I could use that reel with a new rod and line. If so, what wt rod and line would I have to use? Thanks in advance.

generally 3wt and smaller reels will be smaller and lighter then what you have for your 5 wt, but if you can get another sppol for it cheaply and spool it with 3wt line, then youd be ok, just be a kinda heavy combo. I am a big fan of St Croix rods, they make some sweet little 3wts, down to a 4 piece 7' footer. I current have a 2 piece 7' and i love it, also thinking of getting a 5'-6 one but probably wont. you need to be careful with orvis, their bottom end stuff is really expensive for what it is.
