Hello,

I am new to this sight. I joined because I have a new addition to my tank. Its a 75 gallon freshwater tank with 3 Bluegills and a crawfish. We just added a 6 inch spotted gar. He has been in there for a couple days and has not eaten anything. My Bluegills eat everything live or flake , pellet, freeze dried before he does. How can I get him to eat? We tried live feeders today but the Bluegills ate them before he had a chance.

Hey ! welcome here

Try feed more for few day ... give him a few chance and just add more food than your bluegills can eat.

Well, would you rather keep the bluegills or the gar? That's really what it's going to come down to if you only have just the one aquarium.
Please note that you'll need at least a 180 gallon aquarium for the gar when its close to being full grown, and that bluegills generally are not the best tankmates for gars since they can out-compete the gar(s) for food pretty easily most of the time. Also, odds are that it's a Florida gar rather than a spotted gar if you got it from an LFS; true spotted gars are next to impossible to get without catching one yourself or getting it from a reliable source.

Either way, start a thread in the "Gar" sub-forum for some more help with gars.

Thanks!..... It worked this morning. I fed them some freeze dried plankton and flake. Then I threw in 4 feeders and the gar ate one.
