Hi all, first post

I want to create a dinner table Aquarium (might be a very bad idea) and so obviously my biggest worry would be tank depth, my question is if anyone has experience with having only 4 to 5 1/2in depth in the tank, the table itself would be quite big and the fish very small but i'm still worried about the depth being to shallow.

Also, how much space would you need to leave between the water and the glass to keep it without condensation, with or without a fan?

Thanks in advance

For less money than it would cost to do this, you can have a really nice large aquarium in your dining room.

The gimmick factor is not worth the cost and the headache of upkeep.

I already have a 370g in my living room. I have tried to come up with a plan that has very little and easy upkeep because i wouldn't have any glass to clean. I would make a stand in the middle of the table where all the filtration goes and the tabletop would have a wooden decor all around plus a little bit over the edge where some leds can be integrated. I do agree about coffee table aquariums being awful and probably impossible to keep clean when the tank itself is on the ground and most often on a carpet, I would never have that in my home, but this project would be saltwater with some easy mushroom corals and nano size fish and maybe a crab or two and I believe it might be quite interesting.

I guess you can build it around a large frag tank and customize the top and the stand to make it diner table worthy...

There are some issues though...like constant traffic and potential for accidents; and lighting...I don't know if people will like to dine under lights that is required to keep corals alive ;)

you could make a rectangle or square tank.. with demensions of L= 5foot by W= 3foot by H= 5foot for a rectangle design. it would be rather strange but you could Put braces on each side and but an actual glass table top on it but not seal it and you could look down at the fish while you eat. and for cleaning ect all you have to do is take the glass table top off. basicly picture a square or rectangular tank on the ground with a nice looking glass ontop. try a hexagon for the glass cover. This is your best bet. hope I helped. :)

If your considering this, you should think bout filtration. The only ways you could filter the tank is a) sponge filter b) large internal or c) sump plumbed downstairs.
