I purchased a 240 gallon (8x2x2) aquarium with the intentions of owning a black arowana. I made a 50 gallon sump filter courtesy of youtube (uarujoey's upload). How many times does the water have to turnover since they originate from the calm waters of the Negro river basin? I've read somewhere within the 5 times realm would be sufficient but not sure. I dont plan on heavily stocking the tank, possibly a 3 larger predatory fish (havent decided on tankmates). thanks again

Usually anything over 4x/hour. If you going to start stocking heavy, you may want to add more bio media and double it.

when your running a sump filter the minimum amount of return recommended is 3x the volume of the tank. so if your tank is a 100g you would want 400gph which is 3x the the tank volume. there is a sticky/thread about this some where look it up. also if you have 5x the return it should be more then enough if your planning to only house a black aro with maybe couple other fish. some people like to over filter & etc like me, i have i a 8-9x + return rate depending on how i control the flow.
