I'm concerned about my female breeding Ptychochromis Tarantsy .

In After her second spawn in 4 months, 6/13 & 10/2, she started to look worn out, but eating/pooping/active as usual. Minor caudal fin splitting, so added AQ salt per dosage, increased WC. Put in a tank divider with the pair together. She bounced back and after a week I removed the divider.

Seemed OK for the next few weeks.

3 days ago, noticed increased deterioration/fuzzy opaque*in other fins with discoloration of some scales on the back half of her body and increased splitting.

Increased WC, 30% daily, added AQ salt and replenishing with each WC,* increased temp from 79 to 82.

Late Last night after wc, she left the 'cave' she shares with her mate and has been positioning herself directly in the line of filter spray bars, she's never done this before. And didn't eat this morning, also unusual. The pair was still in eyesight of each other and he is not harassing/chasing her. Today she's moving to/from the spray bar and their cave.

Parameters, pH 7.8, amm 0, nitrites 0, nitrates 10<20, gh/kh 8/9, temp 79° regular WC are 30% every 4-5 days, but increased now. R/O water used with buffers.

Stock list, her mate, young female paratilapia 5in, 2 syno multis, 2 etroplus Maculatus,

No aggression in tank, strong pair bond, always together with mate. The tank is calm with the exception of the synos chasing each other. No additions to tank since them about a year ago. Only change in environment was the removal of a cyrtocara moori pair a few weeks ago when she started to look worn out. No other fish show any similar symptoms. I'm guessing she's exhausted and vulnerable health wise because of the two recent spawns.

Not sure how to proceed, advice would be most appreciated! Thanks.

Well, I would think it is improvement that she is leaving the spray bar area - moving back and forth. I think you are doing everything correct, but obviously need to pay close attention to make sure it doesn't get worse.

The only thing is if it is an internal parasite. If things begin to improve with your vigilance then just make sure to keep it up. If she doesn't start to show signs of improvement I would start medicating for internal parasites.

Thanks wrslrcichlid. Its not the best pic, she's tough to photograph. Her pectoral fins are looking pretty fuzzy, so its tough to see. Hopefully its more clear in this pic.

I'm thinking about adding pimafix to the tank for her fins. But I've read conflicting opinions about the effects on respiration.

Hi Laurie, First I want to say you have done an excelent job so far. I wish everyone would include all the info you supplied in your original post. Sounds like you've been reading the threads. She looks like the male is beating her up (perhaps at night) and she is developing a secondary fungal infection. I would put the devider back and treat with API Fungus Cure (Malachite Green and Acriflavin) a combination of Malachite Green (Maracide from Mardel is easy to find) & API Triple Sulfa at full dosing levels per package instructions or API Quick Cure (Malachite Green and Formalin) can also be used. The important thing here is keep the fish seperated during treatment as I think it is the male that is the root cause of this issue.

Thanks Aquanero. Your validation is very reassuring, I really appreciate your input!

Im sorry, Just for clarification, you're recommending API Fungus cure OR Maricide
AND
API Triple Sulfa OR API Quick Cure?

Any of the above are readily available at LFS here in NJ or Amazon.

Regards,
Laurie

Yes I did mean OR with each of those suggestions.

Thanks Aquanero!

OK, hope I have a good alternative to API Fungus cure or Maricide. Interestingly, neither was available in 4 nearby stores. I purchased the recommended alternative Seachem Sulfathiazole to dose at 2 measures per 10 gallons, repeating every 3 days with a 25% change every 3rd day.

Easily found Quick cure and will dose 1 drop per gallon daily for 3 days, on third day 25% WC.

Did another WC this morning, removed chemipure from canisters, temp is 82, nitrates 05. All other parameters are the same. Also lowered the water level to just below spray bars for extra circulation.

Just want to check ~ is the Seachem Sulfathiazole OK as an alternative in combination with quick cure? If not, I'll order fungus cure or maricide online and won't use the Sulfathiazole.
