Hello!
This is my first post on the site! I have been lingering in the shadows reading and checking this site for the past few weeks, and finally decided to register. This site seems very active and I’ve enjoyed all the great info which is very helpful for a new hobbyist like myself!

I am wondering if maybe you all have some advice. I would like to breed my JD’s. Here is the situation:

My tank- I have a 55g with DIY double intake overflow/wet dry filter, pool sand substrate with a couple aponogeton grown from bulbs, couple of broken pots, some “wild caught rocks” (=p) and some plastic tall grass. I keep the temp around 80.

The inhabitants of this tank are 2 blue mystery snails, 2 JD’s, and a convict. The convict is a male about 3-1/2”. First JD is about 6-1/2” male, second is 4” female. No real aggression issues.

The con was introduced to the male JD with another con. They both lasted about 2 weeks, then I woke to find the head bit off of the smaller con. The male JD and survival con have been BFF’s since =p. I saw the female JD in the pet store a short time after and had been reading up on breeding JD’s. I figured I would try it out. After introducing them all the female has taken to the male from day one. She follows him around everywhere with her breeding colors. He seems to enjoy her presence also but not enough to start a breeding ritual. They share a cave, dig out the sand, and show almost every sign they are a pair, except the real stuff lol.

To add to his lack of interest in that regard, about a month ago my wife was taking pics of the tank and really spooked the male JD. He now will only come out of hiding unless he’s hungry, or there is no movement outside the tank for about 5 minutes. Slowly but surely the other 2 have followed suit and are now skittish also.

I have tried covering the glass with a towel for privacy, putting a mirror up to the tank, raised the temp, and even removed the con so they were alone.

So I really have 2 problems, a tank that seems empty because of skittish fish, and a “pair” of JD’s that will not breed.
Help please!

Welcome! JDs are kind a shy fish in general it takes them a while to truly warm up to coming out. As for the breeding takes a while lol. My pair breeds maybe once every two months or so.

Is it normal for them to get spooked so bad they splash around and dart from one end of the tank to the other?

And does it sound like they are a pair?

Guess I will just have to wait this one out lol.

I am at work right now but I'll try and post some pics tonight when I get home.

Normal no, does it happen sometimes yes. My male will still do it and this fish is ten years old. Sounds like a pair to me
