HELP WITH CLASSIC 80s CHILDREN'S HORROR MOVIE TITLE

I'm having problems with a group of friends trying to figure out the title of this movie.

All we can remember is that it's based about some young boy who is missing his parents(literally) and has a black hole in the backyard..

Another scene involved the boy thinkin he was dancing with his mom, but was really dancing with his dog(lol)..

Not sure if it was alien related.
We came up with "THE GATE", but not sure.

Any help would be appreciated.

and btw, i knew there were people out there who saw that movie. lol
