Somewhere
ok...so I am headin up to Oklahoma next weekend to tour the OSU campus and check out apartments in the area, hopefully put down some sort of payment on an apartment while i'm there so when I move in July I have some place to go already.
For those who don't know I will be going for a bachelors in Zoology, and then onto vet school.
So heres where i want all sots of opinions and input.
I am gathering questions to ask both the school and the apartment people.... what are some things I should ask!

Some things I have for school include:

Do I need to schedule a placement exam in order to take chemistry classes?

Which or my credits are transferring over and are there any holes that need to be filled from credits that didn't transfer?

I see a calculus course is recommended for pre vet students. What are my options for that?

(theres a few others but you get the idea)

Some questions for apartments:

What is your pet policy? (followed by further probing questions before any mention of snakes)

what amenities are included? (most of the apt.s I'm lookin at include gas and water)

What is an average or estimated monthly cost for electric?

yeah.... so any and all input is appreciated

dont buy or rent a room. just sleep in the park

your welcome. if you need to shower just use the sprinkler system at 7am. or wait til it rains. i was once homeless and this were my tried and true methods.

I think you have a good start. The questions you have for the college are pretty basic though. You can probably find those answers on the website.

In my experience placement exams are only for english and math. But that varies by school. Chemistry is required for your major so i doubt there would be an exam. They have the classes you need all laid out for you, when you take a tour you can probably pick up this information in detail. You will probably be able to talk to someone from the school your major is in that will give you this info.

My advice for apartments is not to get into too much detail about what or how many animals you have. I would mention it for sure though as you don't want to be ready to sign the lease and see a clause specifically saying no reptiles.

Contact an academic counsler at OSU and schedule a meeting with them. They can answer your questions.

Cant help you with school.. I just met with an advisor and had them give me a sheet with all the classes that were required, credit hours required and my elective options. I am usually good with fig. school out on my own though.

As for the apartment...

Some questions for apartments:

What is your pet policy? (followed by further probing questions before any mention of snakes) Don't mention them. Usually they only care about dogs/cats. Just ask if fish tanks are allowed and what is the size limit and leave it at that. That s what I do. Sometimes I don't even ask for size limit I just ask if they are allowed.

what amenities are included? (most of the apt.s I'm lookin at include gas and water) Always a good one.

What is an average or estimated monthly cost for electric? They can give you an estimate, but it really depends on you.

How is your water metered/billed? As in is it by apartment or building? I find this important b/c usually its more money by building $60 (in my experience) and it costs me $20 when its metered by apartment.. saves a lot of money, imo when done by apartment. I dont need to pay for someone elses wasting of water. If its not included.

Ask about the noise policy. People do tend to be noisy and if your like me, I cant stand noisy party people above me.

My biggest piece of advice is DONT RUSH INTO IT, dont get one just so you have a place to saty. If necessary go back and look some more. That is my best advice. I almost got stuck in a craphole b/c I just wanted to get it done. At the last minute I decided not to put down a deposit and I am so happy I didn't. Look around and wait untill you find a place you really love and you know is the right place, you want the best for your money. Read as many reviews on the place as possible as well. I do a lot of research before even looking at a place. (If you can't tell I move a lot).

Also my other best advice... when you move in... they give you a check off sheet... write EVERYTHING possibly even slightly wrong with the apartment. Every little scrath on the window/floor/tile/counter/wall, every crack, discoloration, water damage, check around the windows for mold. etc. I learned my lesson quick on this one. Cover every inch of that place.

Thats all I can think of for now! Good Luck and you should be just fine! Its a fun experience =]
