Hey guys. I just got done with my diy canopy and notice that the board I use for the hood has started to warp. The front and the back started to warp upwards creating an un-wanted gap in the front. I was thinking about adding pieces of wood to the underside of the hood to act like braces. Any ideas/suggestions? Thanks.
By all means, this canopy looks very good already. I did not use a thin board for the hood. It is constructed of 1 1/2" inch thick solid wood. The only other wood wide enough to cover the canopy would be plywood(at Lowe's), and I don't want the "plywood" look. What kind of wood are you guys using for the hood?
yea 1-1/2 is too thick for this application! try thinner! not all plywoods look bad! other wise u could plywood the inside and cover with thin sheet of oak, maple, etc.
I will post pics in a day or two. Darn it, so I have to build another hood? Is there any other way I can use what I currently have and not have that warping problem? How about vents? I hear of people using vents in their diy canopy.
Before you brace it you should make "relief cuts" on the bottom. Set your blade about 3/4" - 1" deep and rip (parallel to the grain) the board lengthwise every inch or so. If you stop just before the ends of the board you won't see anything when the lid is down. This will allow the board to flatten out without too much resistance.
This is the reason most people go with plywood; solid wood + moisture = warpage. For a nice finished look, just trim the edges of your plywood with some matching wood.
