Long time lurker around here have learned alot this is my first time posting. We have decided to convert our tub in master bedroom to a enclosure for our dwarf caiman enclosure. It is a big tub probably around 4-5 ft across im guessing has somewhere in neighborhood of 200 gallons of water. Ok on to my question on filtration. (I will be sure to post progress pictures as I work on enclosure we are walling it off around it will have waterfall as well as planted)

Ok I have always just bought filters but for this one I want to go diy. I'll try to post pictures of a drawing to better explain it. Im thinking of running a submersible pond pump with line running into sealed 4" pvc and out other end hopefully with pvc running horizontally on shelf above tub and running into a waterfall. Also thought of making a seperate chamber or tank and putting heater in it to get it of tub. Maybe that makes sense cant get pictures to load hopefully can tomorrow when signal is better.

Have you considered using the tubs drain out as an intake? Could have the filter under the house, less noise. Basic sump plumbing with a slight twist could theoretically work for what you're after. Since you're not worried about modifying the structure... drain out to sump under house, return flow could be placed into the wall and just build your landscape around it. All mech. Would stay hidden

Thats ac

That's actually a really good idea I honestly hadnt thought about that.

i would just use the drain as intended, i mean you have a source for hot and cold
water right there with a drain and that would make filling and cleaning (and or w/c)
a lot easier. using the drain for a intake would cost more money not to mention it
would be harder to turn it back to a bathroom if you ever decide to build a bigger
enclosure or something. plus do u really want to dig and break up your bathroom
floor just so u can have filtration underground for something that might be temporary
even if not in the near future?

Thats true as well would probably be better alternative to keep everything separate I kinda looked it over it would be a bit of a job hooking it to drain.

So do y'all think my original idea would work? Here is rough drawing of what I had in mind. Excuse poor drawing skills lol

I disagree, the expense of using the drain as an intake would be as simple as disconnecting the ptrap under the house and fitting it with abs or pvc. Converting it back over would be just as simple. He can also tie into the water source there with simple Ts. Everything could be done for ease and Cost effectiveness. Also it can be set up with little or no impact on future uses of the bathroom should it ever be converted back.

I have to see pictures
