Hello, im new to this forum but not fish. a few years ago I had a bunch of tanks(my biggest was 120 gallons) I was mainly into cichlids. I have been out of the hobby for about 2 years and sold my tanks a while ago. I want to get back in and build 1 very large tank(240ish gallons). The problem is I don't have much money to work with. My dad is very good at building things and we have fixed leaky aquariums in the past so with some proper guidance we should be fine. First I need to know how thick the glass would need to be for the tank im thinking about building. Its length would be 60 inches, the height would be 26 inches and the depth would be 36 inches and it calculates to 243.1 us gallons. Also what types of glass works and what's the most affordable type and were would I get it? Also I was thinking a strong wood brace on all the corners and the bottom and top of the aquarium would work, am I right? For the base of the aquarium i was going to use glass. I can figure out the filtration and everything else on my own, I just need help on the build im considering.

I was able to get a few pieces of 1/2" & 5/8" tempered glass free from a hockey arena that had switched to lexan. Wouldn't hurt to phone around and ask.

If you're building anything under 400G, you would probably be better off to just buy a tank. DIY tank builds aren't as cheap as one would imagine. You could buy a tank that size or larger for under $1K with a bit of looking.

From what i understand temper glass doesnt just break like plate glass does it explodes also plate can take a scarp hit better then temp .. this is just my understanding i could be wrong .

You are correct about tempered glass shattering instead of cracking. Althugh generally tempered glass will take about 3 times more pressure to break compared to float glass.

Yeah, I wouldn't use tempered.. there are hundreds of tank threads on this site where the glass cracked.. allowing the owner a chance to repair and save the occupants. Kiss that opportunity goodbye with tempered.. would be just instant flood if something hit that glass or created any stress on it.
