my male flowerhorn is beating the crap out of the female.:irked: I bought them two weeks ago and have them in a 40 gallon breeder. If he keeps this up she will be gone soon any ideas on what to do,i dont want to lose her.

Your 40 gallon aquarium is to small for the two of them, you need to divide a larger tank or remove her asap...he will kill her if she isn't ready to breed.

Fh's are extremely territoriol fish....sometimes a male of female won't like the mate "you" pick for them. If they had been previously paired the move may have caused stress.

I have a 75 with dempsey grow outs in it, i could switch them.If it doesnt work out with the 75 i will have to bring her back.

Put her in the 75 with the JD untill she heals up and settles in. Then put in a divider in the 75 and then swap the JD out for the male FH. In his new environment he may be less agressive toward her. If he still dosnt act like a gentlmen then install the divider.

PS FH females like to lay their eggs in a clay dish or pot, maybe this will help her lay eggs. G/L

I put the male and female in the 75 divided it with eggcrate and he is still trying to get through to kill her, they were fine for two weeks than he just freaked out!.oh well she is now safe.

How'd you buy flowerhorns and not know a 40 gallon is MINIMUM for 1 FH? But even a 40 is small for just one..

that an easy answer... i did know just at three inches i thought i would have plenty of time before i had to move them 36x18x16 lots of space for now.but the question and problem was why is the male beating the crap out of the female and what to do about it.:) so i put them in the 75 sooner with divider and still have same problem he doesnt like her and probably never will.

Post some pics, I'm looking for a nice female FH.

i would but my son dropped my camera.:( i am new to fhs i would say that she is a low grade fh. if i can get my step fathers i will send a pic.

not to be a promoter of small tanks but i used to bred my main couple in a 40g breeder, then take them out when the eggs were fertilized and let the the fry grow out in that tank.
i see nothing wrong with it, but u have to make sure the male will take to the female. have hiding spots that only the female can fit, or even seperate them in the tank until her tube drops, the he might be more reciptive to her, but if u don't take any of these steps ur male will rip ur female apart. fh are generally loners and u have to ease them into breeding
