So I'm looking at getting a 96x24x30h and where I want to put it I can't have a sump underneath so I am looking at alternatives for filtration. I already own an fx4 on a 125 in conjunction with 2 hob filters and I have a c360 on a 75gal grow out.

Would an fx4 + fx6 be enough for a 300gal with ~8-10 ca/sa cichlids 6-12"? I could also add a sponge to a powerhead to help as well. I could then move my c360 to my 125 that way.
I'm moving fish from my 75 to 125 and my 125+55 to 300 eventually.

Ideally I'd like to dodge the cost of 2x fx6 if an fx4 + fx6 and maybe a powerhead with sponge could do it.

What do you guys think?

I have a 96x36x24 with three FX6s as the only filtration. One FX6 runs through a UV steriliser, and I have twin 230 Maxspect Gyre to ensure good water circulatio. It's heavily stocked and I do weekly water changes. All's good.

Your fx4+fx6 could work. Just check on ammonia and nitrites once a week or so for the next couple of years. That will let you know if you have enough bio-filtration.

You could also do matten filters, it's what I intend to do. They seem extremely slick and super cheap. There are a few threads on this forum to read up on them.

Put three SunSun 404B’s on it, then add a fourth later, if needed. If you can get a good prefilter sponge on the intakes, then you should be able to minimize your filter maintenance. Just make sure you clean out the prefilter sponges often.

I have read about the matten filter and a used tank I was looking at has a corner overflow I could probably convert into a matten filter and hide a heater in there too.

Guess I will just have to get the tank put the filters on and just test the water often and see
