Hello. I am completely new to this and need help. I just bought a SeaClear Rectangular 30 Gallon Tank. I plain on doing a freshwater tank. I was thanking of buying a wet/dry aqueon proflex modular sump filtration system model 1 http://www.petco.com/product/114379/Aqueon-ProFlex-Modular-Sump-Filtration-Systems.aspx . Read that the wet/dry where easier to maintain. Is this what I need. If so what else would I need. I know I need a pump but what kind and how do I get the water form the tank to filtration system. What kind of heater would be good and do you put it on the tank or in the filtration system(read of doing it both ways). Basically I have no idea what I'm doing. Does anybody have some sort of diagram that shows the order and the stuff you need. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

to be honest, i would just get a canister filter for a 30gal. for example, a Rena Xp 2 would work great. easy and simple to clean too. but thats just me.

I would just get an AquaClear 50 or AquaClear 70 power filter. Easy filter to use. Hangs on the back of the tank. Fill with water and plug it in. As far as heaters go, you would want a 100 watt submersible heater.

Ohh yeah that sounds a little extreme for a 30 gallon, I would go with the above suggestion for a Aquaclear 50 or 70. I run a 70 on my 30 gallon and its great

Thanks for the help. My thought on getting the aqueon proflex modular sump filtration system model 1 was in the finale chamber where you put your return pump I could also put my heater and uv sterilizer. That way there would be less clutter in the tank. If this is a bad idea please let me know thanks.

Totally not a bad idea! Itll do well for what you want it to do, it just is going to cost a LOT more then an HOB aquaclear

I'll agree with the rest. Most sump filters hold almost 30 gallons by themselves. You could also do a small DIY one, just scale everything down. A HOB power filter or a small canister would be a better way to go financially, though...

Edit: Just read your last post. The sump will work, and will help reduce clutter in your main tank. It will also increase the total water volume of your system, which is good. If that's what you want to do, then by all means go for it. You can never really have too much filtration.

Yeah with a canister filter you could run UV and a heater inline too so you eliminate clutter from your tank. I wouldn't use a store-bought sump for a 30 gallon.

Its cheaper. If price isn't an issue, get a sump and add a couple of powerheads to keep circulation going. If you're concerned about how much money you are spending, the canister will be just about as effective at 1/3 the price.
