About 6 months ago i lost a true parrot and green terror to an unknown infection - basically little white spots appreared on their lips, then the flesh around their mouth and gills starting "decomposing" and then they died. All my other fish (oscar, severums, plec) have been fine.

The last couple of days i have noticed my chocolate cichlid not eating or swimming much, and he has some white spots on his lips so i am assuming it is the same thing again.

Anyone have any ideas what it is, what casues it and how to treat it? Want to try and save my chocolate in time.

Thanks

Sounds like a Bacteria infection. How often do you do water changes? How big are they and what size tank do you have them in?

they are in a 200gal tank filtered with 3 fluval 405's. I do a 50% water change every 2 weeks.

The parrot was 14", the green terror 9" and the chocolate is about 5".

Bump up temperature to 86 degrees, throw in 1 tbsp of salt per 5 gallons (40 tbsp for you)

I would move the chocolate to a hospital tank by himself, and treat the main tank and hospital tank with aquarium salt. Also what are you feeding them??

Remember not to just set your heater to 86, you need to slowly move the temperature up. If you change it to quickly, it could kill your fish.

It doesn't matter what it has, just add salt and pray for the best.

lol no but seriously, if it's a bacterial infection (your description sounds like columnaris) you need to lower the temperature to the low 70s (warmer water makes it worse) and treat with Maracyn II or Kanamycin. Try to get a picture of the lesions and post here to confirm.

Glad someone jumped in and said this. If it is columnaris raising the temp is lethal, lower the temp. A friend of mine used aquarium pharmaceuticals TMP powder. It is a sulfur powder. Look up the disease and learn, and look up the med and get some.

Here is why I said raise the temp. If it is columnaris, the fish will probably die. The best thing to do is to add an air stone because it is often caused by a lack of co2 and overcrowding. The medicines are only effective at very high concentrations, which often kill the fish before the disease. But, they are worth a try since it is very contagious.
